Just checking in to drop some photos from my award ceremony. A couple of weeks ago, I was honored as a “Forty under 40” awardee at my alma mater, George Mason University.
It was a wonderful event celebrating the accomplishments of young alumni leaders within the Black community. This inaugural event was a fundraiser for the Black Scholars Endowment Fund at the university.
Something that not a lot of people know is that I nominated myself for this award (as I’m sure a lot of other awardees did as well). I wasn’t originally going to submit an application because I figured I had racked up enough awards at this stage in my professional journey. I wanted to allow other people to get the spotlight for a change.
But for whatever reason, something encouraged me to still fill out the form, so I did! Writing about myself and making myself (and others!) look good on paper is one of my skillsets, so I’m not surprised that I was selected.
I want this example to be encouragement to someone who needs that extra push to put themselves out there. Everything won’t always be handed to you. Sometimes you need to fill out that application, go to that meeting, take that interview.
I’m in a season where I’m doing a lot of “putting myself out there.” I’m doing job shadows, going to networking events, taking classes, reading books, writing articles, speaking at events, etc. so that I can attract the right audience.
I believe that all of my efforts will produce fruitful results. It’s just a matter of time.
This award ceremony was a great confidence booster for me and it also isn’t a bad thing to put on a resume! What’s even more special though, is the overwhelming support I received from my family and friends. I probably had the largest number of guests to my name, which is pretty cool.
And to think, none of this would’ve happened if I didn’t write my name on the ballot. There are so many opportunities waiting for us–we just have to take the first step!
I will keep you posted on how my journey unfolds.
By the way, we are into month TWELVE of this journey. Wow. I’m sure I’ll do a recap of the year before the month is over.
For now, enjoy some of the photos!
Until Next Time,
